Spirituality and Therapy

The quest for spiritual growth and development

“This work is about transformation —
from the person we are, to the person we really are.
In the end, we can’t be anyone else”.
~ Marion Rosen

We would be honored to assist in your transformation.

“The spiritual journey is individual, highly personal. It can't be organized or regulated. It isn't true that everybody should follow one path. Listen to your own truth.” ~ Ram Dass

Chaos and turmoil on our earth have disrupted global equilibrium. We find ourselves off-kilter, out-of-balance. Issues such as depression and anxiety are epidemic. For many, relationships are unfulfilling, still worse they may be toxic or violent. Job stress, unemployment, economic instability and poverty are problems faced by millions. Disease, erosion of natural resources and pollutants threaten the existence of all.

With the world so full of discord, life is fragmented. Our disconnectedness causes fear, and our egos go unchecked. Negativity, trepidation, and panic add fuel to an already blazing fire. It is glaringly obvious the answers are not coming from external sources.

Janette Ayd, Psy.D., LP and Molly Cavanagh, MSW, LICSW, Minneapolis Therapy and Marriage Counseling therapists find that many clients are seeking a different experience than traditional therapy offers.  These clients are not only interested in behavioral change, but are seeking counseling that integrates mindfulness into therapy.  Psychology literally means the study of the psyche, and psyche refers to the spirit or the soul; hence, the intertwining of psychology and spirituality. As a natural progression, more individuals and couples incorporate spirituality into their therapy.

Organized religion is a means to discover and live in the spirit, yet it has also disillusioned and caused struggles for many. Finding and depending on the spirit for guidance and direction is basic to all religions, but belongs to no sole faith, theology, or New Age philosophy. No group, religious creed, or denomination can lay claim to the tenets of the spirit, because none exist. SPIRIT IS. It resides within and is available to us on a moment to moment basis. Spirituality entails mindfulness and consciousness, and it is here where we become alert and in touch with our essence. Some call this God, others refer to it as the Holy Spirit. Still others recognize it as Presence, the Christ Center, Being, I AM or the Buddha Nature. But whatever name we give, it is at our core where we find solace, comfort, healing and wholeness.

The good news is that people are waking up and becoming conscious to the fact that the answers to collective problems reside within each of us. Many are choosing to be in this world in an intentional, deliberate manner. Through spirit we reach within to connect with the Source. Healing our planet begins with healing of self. Moving beyond trauma, pain and crisis means accepting what is at the present moment, and recognizing how ego based thoughts and actions prevent us from living harmoniously. When we become mindful of our own being, we relax and stop running on a treadmill going nowhere. Renewal of spirit takes precedence over ego based existence. Living in the present moment creates true contentment, pleasure and satisfaction. A sense of delight and wonder seeps into our daily lives.

At Minneapolis Therapy and Marriage Counseling we come from a position that therapy should be integrated and meet the needs of our clients where they are right now. Some clients are interested in spiritual development, others prefer the traditional model. We meet you on your turf and begin the journey from your front door.

Molly Cavanagh and Janette Ayd have years of education, training and experience and use a common-sense, down-to-earth approach to combine cognitive behavioral therapy, a biopsychosocial approach with spiritual therapy. We believe the journey of therapy is a process in which you, with the assistance of the therapist, work toward mindfulness, change and healing. Our goal at Minneapolis Therapy and Marriage Counseling is to facilitate the process of discovering your unique life purpose in order to live a meaningful, intentional and balanced life based in love, joy and peace.
